New Delhi, Oct. 8 -- The Delhi government on Thursday ordered the closure of all retail liquor vends in the city on October 9 and 10 as a preventive measure to maintain public order.

An Excise Department order, issued on the basis of inputs from the Delhi Police, directed the closure of liquor outlets operating under specified licences, including L6, L6&L6FG, L8, L10 and L8&L14.

However, hotels, clubs, bars and restaurants holding valid excise licences to serve liquor will remain open.

The decision comes amid calls for a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10 over demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. More than 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across Delhi, with no permission granted for the proposed gathering.
