India, July 25 -- Calling Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation "a significant intervention," Supreme Court lawyer Harshit Anand, who has been assisting protesters for the past month, said the development marked a rare political response to sustained public pressure. He added that the past few weeks had been challenging, alleging that several young protesters were detained and, in some cases, subjected to police brutality. "As lawyers, we have been trying to provide as much legal assistance as possible," he said, adding that legal teams have been working on the ground to safeguard the rights of those detained. Legal volunteers said their primary role has been to ensure that those picked up are not held without due process and to facilitate their release, often through bond papers wherever required. The day of the resignation also witnessed tense scenes. According to 16-year-old volunteer Rakshit Ponetha, tear gas was used before the resignation was announced, leaving several people affected, including himself. Rakshit said he briefly fainted after inhaling the fumes but returned to help protesters after receiving treatment at the site.
