New Delhi, Sept. 16 -- A 52-year-old advocate practising in Delhi courts was allegedly stabbed in the abdomen by a relative in southwest Delhi's Nasirpur area, with questions being raised over the initial handling of the case by Delhi Police, which registered an FIR under Section 118(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), instead of the more serious charge of attempt to murder.
The FIR was registered at Sagarpur police station on September 14 and states that the incident took place around 8.30 pm on September 13 near 265 DDA Flats in Nav Jeevan Apartment, Nasirpur.
According to the complaint, Manjit Singh (52) told police that he had sustained a stab injury during the incident.
He was taken to Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, where a medico-legal examination found a 2 cm by 2 cm punctured wound on the upper left side of his abdomen, below the costal margin. The injury was caused by a sharp weapon, though the nature of the weapon was kept under observation.
Police initially booked the case under Section 118(1), which deals with voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons, including instruments used for shooting, stabbing or cutting.
The complainant's side, however, maintained that the incident amounted to an attempt to murder.
Following intervention by the New Delhi Bar Association, Section 109 of the BNS was added, amid allegations of police inaction and improper handling of the stabbing case.
