Dehradun, April 16 -- The 300 MW Lakhwar multipurpose project on the Yamuna river is gaining momentum after a review by Jal Shakti Secretary V L Kantarao, who stressed its strategic importance for water and energy security in North India.

Kantarao directed officials to adhere to timelines and expedite work, reviewing progress on dam construction and key infrastructure. The project will regulate water supply to Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi, while generating power for Uttarakhand.

Developed by UJVN Limited, it is expected to produce around 572 million units of renewable energy annually and support irrigation, drinking water and flood control.

UJVN Managing Director Ajay Kumar Singh said, "The project is being closely monitored at the central level," highlighting its role in sustainable water management and green energy transition. Authorities were also asked to ensure environmental compliance.
