Leh, Sept. 29 -- The first air consignment of 15,000 'A-grade' Liliums grown in Ladakh was flown from Leh to national markets on Tuesday, marking a push towards commercial floriculture and new livelihood opportunities in the Union Territory. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena flagged off the consignment.
L-G Saxena said the initiative, completed in 60 days, was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of empowering farmers and youth through agricultural diversification.
He said commercial floriculture would promote rural entrepreneurship and provide local growers access to national flower markets.
The LG said flower cultivation could also add to Ladakh's tourism potential, with flower fields emerging as destinations for visitors and film shoots.
He described the initiative as an opportunity to combine profitable agriculture with sustainable tourism and create new economic avenues for local communities.
