India, July 22 -- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday attended a Vishesh Kirtan Darbar at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Janakpuri, marking the 100th martyrdom anniversary of Sardar Teja Singh Samundri. Delhi minister Ashish Sood also attended the programme, which featured Gurbani Kirtan and Ardaas. Addressing the congregation, Sandhu paid tribute to Teja Singh Samundri's contributions to the Sikh reform movement, the freedom struggle and social reform. He recalled that Samundri died in Lahore Jail in 1926 at the age of 43 and was among the 11 Sikh leaders who refused to apologise for their release. He noted that Teja Singh Samundri Hall in the Darbar Sahib complex remains the only building named after an ordinary Sikh. The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted Samundri's role in promoting education, including establishing schools, supporting girls' education and championing social equality. He recalled that Samundri mortgaged 50 acres of land to fund the SGPC's legal battle before the Privy Council, with the money later used to create an education fund that supported scholarships for future leaders.
