India, Aug. 7 -- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar T.S. Sandhu chaired a comprehensive review meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Special CP (Traffic), Joint CPs (Traffic) and DCPs (Traffic) to assess traffic management and enforcement across the Capital. The meeting reviewed the implementation of directions issued during the previous review on June 29, 2026, to ease congestion, curb traffic violations and address monsoon-related bottlenecks. Reiterating his firm stance on traffic enforcement, the L-G said visible policing is key to reducing congestion and ensuring smooth mobility. He directed officers to maintain maximum presence at major congestion points during peak hours, strictly penalise dangerous violations such as helmetless riding and wrong-side driving, and stressed zero tolerance towards traffic indiscipline, compromise in road safety and laxity in public mobility. Also Read - Narela: Merc-car crash kills woman pedestrian The L-G was informed that proactive measures by PWD, MCD and I&FCD reduced waterlogging locations to 65 during the current monsoon season (up to August 5, 2026), compared to 194 in 2024 and 169 in 2025. Repeated waterlogging sites declined from 53 in the previous two years to 20 this year. Traffic congestion complaints also fell, with helpline calls reducing from 701 in July 2025 to 572 in July 2026, while social media complaints dropped from 1,792 to 1,653. Under Project Sangam, 553 joint meetings were held with RWAs and MWAs. Of 510 suggestions received from residents, 410 have been implemented, while 100 were referred to civic agencies. The Traffic Pathshala initiative provided road safety counselling to over 17,400 violators across 710 key intersections. Wrong side driving prosecutions rose 113%, from 1,64,365 challans up to July 31, 2025, to 3,51,523 during the corresponding period in 2026. Between April 8 and July 31, 2026, 2,321 FIRs were registered against severe offenders. Unauthorised parking challans increased 28 per cent to 15,36,944, while joint foot patrols cleared 399 road encroachments and prosecuted 1,915 illegal parking cases.
