New Delhi, Sept. 24 -- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar TS Sandhu on Thursday inaugurated the Sadbhavana Sammelan at the historic Gandhi Ashram of the Harijan Sevak Sangh at Kingsway Camp, in the presence of National President of the Harijan Sevak Sangh Prof. (Dr.) SankarKumar Sanyal and other dignitaries and guests.
Recalling the history of the Harijan Sevak Sangh, Sandhu said it was founded in 1932 through the efforts of Mahatma Gandhi, when he was leading a nationwide movement against social discrimination. He said Gandhi's idea of freedom and Swaraj meant that every individual should be treated with dignity and rights. The L-G also recalled that several leading freedom fighters had visited the place to meet Gandhi and said the freedom struggle for political independence was accompanied by a parallel struggle for social unity, equality and brotherhood.
Sandhu recalled that Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya had presided over the historic Bombay meeting at which the Harijan Sevak Sangh was established, following the signing of the Poona Pact between Malaviya and Dr BR Ambedkar to address the concerns of the Depressed Classes. He said Gandhi, Malaviya and Babasaheb, in their different ways, worked towards ensuring that political freedom was accompanied by greater equality and dignity.
