India, July 28 -- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday chaired a review meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), taking stock of key civic priorities across the Capital, including solid waste management, garbage disposal, measures to prevent waterlogging, drain cleaning and preparedness against vector-borne diseases. Reviewing the remediation of legacy waste at Delhi's landfill sites, the L-G appreciated the progress made by the MCD but reiterated his earlier direction that all fresh waste reaching the sites must be scientifically processed simultaneously to prevent further accumulation. He cautioned that the gains achieved through remediation would be undermined if incoming waste continued to pile up and directed officials to establish a robust monitoring mechanism to ensure daily waste processing keeps pace with daily inflow.

Expressing concern over the city's waste management, the L-G noted that around 50 per cent of waste is still not segregated at source and nearly half of the waste generated each day continues to be dumped at landfill sites. Citing the success of the Indore Municipal Corporation, he directed officials to examine the feasibility of implementing the Indore model as a pilot project in one MCD zone. The meeting also reviewed measures to prevent vector-borne diseases, particularly dengue and malaria, during the monsoon. Officials discussed issues related to traffic congestion at toll plazas and the implementation of the PM-UDAY scheme. Looking ahead to winter, the L-G directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to curb air pollution, with particular emphasis on resurfacing roads across the Capital. He also ordered a dedicated road safety audit of MCD roads to identify and address safety concerns. Concluding the meeting, the L-G stressed that every MCD officer must remain vigilant, proactive and accountable in delivering efficient civic services, saying that a cleaner, safer and more resilient Delhi can only be achieved through timely execution and a strong sense of responsibility.
