New Delhi, May 16 -- In a significant push towards environmental sustainability and urban water conservation, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Saturday launched the "Jal Sanchay Abhiyaan" aimed at rejuvenating 101 water bodies across the national capital.

The initiative, undertaken by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), seeks to restore and conserve Delhi's traditional lakes, baolis, reservoirs, and ponds to improve groundwater recharge and ecological balance. The launch event was held at District Park in Paschim Vihar in the presence of area MLA Karnail Singh and DDA Vice-Chairman N. Saravana Kumar.

According to officials, DDA currently manages 822 water bodies across Delhi, of which 424 have been identified for restoration. In the first phase of the campaign, 101 water bodies spread across nearly 155 hectares will undergo immediate rejuvenation work, including desilting, dredging, excavation, and clearing of natural catchment channels before the monsoon season.

Speaking at the event, the Lieutenant Governor said the campaign was not merely a beautification exercise but a long-term effort to ensure water security and sustainable urban development in Delhi.

The restoration work under Phase-I is expected to be completed by August 30, 2026. Phase-II, targeted for completion by May 2027, will focus on long-term sustainability measures such as fencing, strengthening embankments, plantation drives, and installation of sewage treatment plants wherever feasible.

Officials said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for ecological conservation and climate-resilient urban infrastructure.
