Kolkata, Oct. 12 -- In a major move to streamline emergency services, Lalbazar, the headquarters of the Kolkata Police, has issued a strict directive prohibiting the use of Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112) vehicles and motorcycles for any purpose other than their designated emergency duties.
Following the implementation of the centralised 112 emergency helpline, about 450 vehicles, including motorcycles and cars, equipped with high-tech infrastructure were deployed across the city. The new guidelines aim to ensure that these vehicles remain fully operational and available exclusively for distress calls.
According to sources, ERSS vehicles have been barred from use in standard police station purposes, regular investigations, or any other purposes. When not actively responding to an emergency signal, these vehicles are strictly mandated to remain on active, emergency-grid patrolling within their designated zones.
To enforce compliance, Lalbazar has activated continuous real-time location monitoring. Every ERSS car and motorcycle is equipped with a pre-installed GPS tracking device monitored directly by the control room. Any unauthorised route deviation without a valid emergency reason will be flagged instantly. The new standard operating procedure sets a strict response timeline for emergency teams.
Vehicles must be dispatched immediately upon receiving a distress signal from the central network.
If a response team takes more than 10 minutes to reach a spot or activate a rescue, it will automatically trigger a formal internal investigation. Personnel found guilty of delaying or misusing the emergency fleet will face severe departmental disciplinary action.
