Kolkata, Oct. 16 -- A paediatrician returning from Paris to Kolkata via Delhi on Air India flight sprang into action after a mid-air medical emergency involving a middle-aged passenger, Samson Singh of Jalandhar, turned fatal as Singh collapsed on the floor of the flight.
"The emergency unfolded around Thursday when the cabin crew announced that a passenger was critically ill and sought medical assistance on board," said Dr Prabir Bhaumik.
"The passenger's oxygen saturation was dropping, his heart rate was slow, his pulse had become weak and his blood pressure was falling.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, I initiated CPR and guided another person in administering ventilation with an Ambu bag, working alongside the cabin crew to stabilise him," he said. Over nearly four hours, the doctor and cabin crew repeatedly assessed the passenger's vital signs and resumed resuscitation efforts whenever his condition deteriorated.
The passenger regained consciousness intermittently, but his condition continued to fluctuate. With sustained efforts, the team managed to keep him alive until the aircraft reached Delhi, where an ambulance and medical team were ready to receive him.
