Kolkata, July 15 -- Preparations for India's first population census since 2011 have gathered pace in Kolkata, with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) launching a large-scale training programme for nearly 12000 enumerators and supervisors.
The training began on Wednesday and will continue till July 31 as part of preparations for the 2027 Census. KMC has set up a dedicated Census Cell to oversee the exercise, one of the civic body's biggest administrative operations.
According to KMC officials, training sessions will be held daily from 9.30 am to 6 pm at multiple venues across the city. Around 77 batches will undergo training each day under KMC's field trainers, who have already received specialised instruction on census procedures.
Ahead of the programme, the civic body deployed 100 municipal employees to the Census Cell to manage logistics, including guiding trainees to classrooms and distributing training materials. Many of them currently hold administrative posts and will return to their regular duties after completing their census assignments.
In addition, KMC has engaged another 250 to 300 employees for census-related work. Officials said more personnel may be drafted as the exercise progresses.
Describing the census as a "massive operation" for Kolkata, a senior KMC official stressed that comprehensive training would be key to ensuring accurate enumeration. "The census exercise in Kolkata is enormous and must be carried out with utmost care. Training is vital for its successful implementation. Officials handling backend operations have already been trained, while the trainers responsible for instructing the 12,000 enumerators and supervisors were given advance orientation. The entire process will be monitored by the Census Cell," the official said.
