New Delhi, Oct. 6 -- In a move aimed at tackling recurring monsoon waterlogging in parts of west and northwest Delhi, the city government on Tuesday approved a Rs 263.45-crore project to build a 4.5-km drain along the railway line in Kirari, with work targeted for completion by December 2027.
The Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC), chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, cleared the project, which will have a design discharge capacity of 760 cusecs. The drain will start from Mundka Halt station and connect to the Supplementary Drain, serving as a major outfall for rainwater accumulating in the surrounding areas.
The project is expected to benefit residents across four Assembly constituencies, Kirari, Mundka, Bawana and Nangloi Jat, besides improving drainage in more than 70 unauthorised colonies in Kirari.
"Waterlogging is not merely about water accumulating for a short period, it directly affects people's mobility, businesses, homes and everyday lives," Gupta said, adding
that the government had taken the project forward as a permanent solution to the problem.
The Chief Minister said the Railways had also approved the project following efforts by the Delhi government. "Previous governments did not work with the required seriousness to resolve waterlogging in the area, but our government has made it a priority and initiated work on the project," she said.
Several areas in Mundka, including Rani Khera Industrial Area, Venu Enclave, Ratan Park, Rajdhani Park, JJ Cluster Colony, Rajendra Park Extension, Ram
Nagar, Kunwar Singh Nagar and Nilothi village, are expected to benefit from the drainage network.
