Kolkata, May 24 -- Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar on Sunday resigned from the post of president of the party's organisational district unit in Barasat, taking moral responsibility for the party's poor performance in the 2026 Assembly elections.

In her resignation letter addressed to state Trinamool Congress president Subrata Bakshi, Kakoli indirectly criticised the party's poll strategy and appeared to take a swipe at political consultancy firm I-PAC without naming it.

She wrote that it would be difficult to achieve success through "mushrooming organisations" and urged the party leadership to rely once again on honest, experienced and dedicated grassroots workers to restore the party's image.

The resignation comes in the backdrop of the Trinamool Congress suffering major setbacks in North 24 Parganas, including defeats in several Assembly segments in Barasat and Barrackpore during the recently concluded elections.

A long-time associate of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Kakoli has been regarded as one of the party's veteran leaders and has

participated in several political movements led by the Trinamool supremo.

Apart from being elected MP from Barasat three times, she had also been serving as the organisational district president and chief of the party's women's wing.

Following the Assembly poll debacle, she was removed from the post of chief whip in the Lok Sabha and replaced by senior MP Kalyan Banerjee.

At the time, Kakoli had expressed disappointment on social media, saying four decades of loyalty to the party had been rewarded in this manner.
