Kolkata, Sept. 9 -- Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge on Wednesday assumed office as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, stressing the need to reduce case pendency while preserving public confidence in the judiciary.
Governor R N Ravi administered the oath at a ceremony in Court Room 1 of the high court, attended by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose and other dignitaries.
Former CM Mamata Banerjee congratulated the new Chief Justice through her X account and welcomed him to Bengal.
In his first address, Justice Ghuge said judicial efficiency must be matched by efforts to ensure that justice remains accessible to marginalised sections. He also called for greater use of technology to improve transparency and access to court proceedings.
He said the "faith" of the common people, whom he described as the "ultimate stakeholder", in the judiciary must remain unshaken. Referring to the Bench and Bar as the "two wheels of the golden chariot of justice", Justice Ghuge said he looked forward to working with judges and lawyers to ensure the institution functioned smoothly and fairly. Justice Ghuge was elevated to the Bombay High Court in June 2013 and became its acting Chief Justice in June 2026. He began practising law in 1990 after completing his law course in Maharashtra. His practice initially focused on workers and trade unions before expanding to industrial establishments, including multinational companies.
