Kolkata, March 8 -- Jadavpur University (JU) is considering conducting its counselling process independently for admission to engineering in the backdrop of a section of faculty members alleging that delays in the publication of the state Joint Entrance results last year led to the loss of meritorious students.

The higher secondary examination conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education is already over while the CBSE and ISC class XII examinations are currently underway.

Under the existing system, the Joint Entrance Board conducts the examination and prepares the merit list. Based on this list, students are admitted to different colleges and universities through a centrally conducted online counselling process held in phases. According to sources, the Faculty Council of Engineering at the university has claimed that it has no objection to the way the state Joint Entrance Board conducts the examination. However, it wants to conduct counselling for admissions on its own based on the merit list prepared by the board.

Dean of Engineering at JU, Partha Pratim Biswas, said the Faculty Council has already decided that the university should conduct its own counselling. "The final decision will be taken at the Executive Council (EC ) meeting. If there is too much delay, it becomes difficult to attract good students. That affects the standard of the university and may also impact students' success in securing jobs," he said.

The EC meeting is likely to be held later this month. After a final decision is taken, the proposal will be sent to the Higher Education Department for approval.

Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said the proposal was a decision of the Faculty Council and would be discussed in the EC before being taken up with the state government.
