Greater Noida, Oct. 9 -- The Noida International Airport in Jewar will be renamed Narendra Modi International Airport after the Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved a proposal to this effect on Friday. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath announced the decision at a press conference following a cabinet meeting chaired by him.

The renaming proposal comes as the airport prepares to play a larger role in meeting the growing aviation demand in the National Capital Region (NCR). Located in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, the greenfield airport is expected to improve connectivity for passengers from Noida, Greater Noida and other parts of western Uttar Pradesh.

The airport's first phase has been designed to handle around 12 million passengers annually. Spread across more than 1,300 hectares, the project is also expected to support cargo operations, attract investment and generate employment opportunities as its capacity expands.

A major component of the airport's development plan is the integration of multiple transport options. A ground transportation centre is being developed to facilitate passenger movement between the airport and different parts of the region.

The proposed facilities include metro connectivity, high-speed rail links, bus services, taxis and parking for private vehicles.

The airport is expected to complement Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and help distribute the growing passenger load across the NCR. Improved road and rail connectivity will be crucial to ensuring convenient access for travellers from Delhi and neighbouring districts.

Plans also envisage linking the airport with the proposed Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor, although the connectivity project will depend on further development and implementation.

Environmental sustainability is another key focus of the airport project. Its development plans include measures to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency, with the stated ambition of achieving net-zero emissions.

The cabinet's approval marks a key step in the proposed change of name. The airport is expected to emerge as an important aviation and economic hub for Uttar Pradesh, with its long-term impact depending on the expansion of passenger services, transport infrastructure and supporting commercial activity.
