New Delhi, Oct. 4 -- Protesters detained during demonstrations at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar have alleged physical and sexual harassment by police personnel, while the Delhi Police termed the allegations "baseless".
More than 500 protesters have been detained in Delhi so far, with some alleging they were picked up twice. Protesters said those detained were taken to different police stations and released after some time, with some allegedly being taken to locations away from Jantar Mantar.
A 23-year-old protester alleged that police personnel forcibly took mobile phones, microphones and cameras from detainees and did not record their details before releasing them. Another 25-year-old woman alleged that a male constable touched her inappropriately while she was being detained. Some protesters also alleged that they were beaten by police personnel and kept in rooms without CCTV cameras.
DCP New Delhi Sachin Sharma denied the allegations, saying police personnel had themselves been assaulted during the protests.
