New Delhi, Oct. 17 -- Tension broke out at Jadavpur 8B bus stand on Saturday evening after police allegedly directed the removal of a CPI(M) book stall, prompting party workers to form a human chain around it.
A bulldozer was brought to the spot, but the stall remained in place as the protest continued. Central forces were also deployed at the spot.
CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty and state committee member Sudip Sengupta reached the spot and questioned the police over the directive, demanding to see the legal order authorising the stall's removal.
Jadavpur University students and some local residents also joined the protest.
Sengupta said the stall had been inaugurated by Biman Bose, chairman of the West Bengal Left Front Committee, on October 13 and had operated for four days without objection.
He claimed the party had informed the police in writing before setting up the stall, paid the requisite taxes to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and obtained permission from CESC for an electricity connection.
