Malda, May 11 -- Amid heightened vigilance to prevent post-poll violence, the Malda District Police launched a series of successful operations across the district, leading to the recovery of illegal firearms and the interception of suspected cattle smuggling vehicles.

In one incident, police from Chanchal arrested a youth identified as Roni Hossain (30) from Khelanapur on Sunday evening after allegedly recovering a 9 mm pistol and three rounds of live cartridges from his possession. According to police sources, the accused was moving suspiciously in the area when officers intercepted and searched him.

He was later produced before the Chanchal Sub-Divisional Court with a plea for police custody to facilitate further investigation into the source and intended use of the firearm.

In another operation conducted on May 10, Kaliachak police detained one Jahangir Badsha of Baranagar Danga under the Jalalpur area and recovered a country-made one-shot firearm along with a live cartridge. A specific case has been registered against the accused.

Meanwhile, in Gazole, police and central forces intercepted three pick-up vehicles allegedly transporting cattle without valid documents near Kadubari on NH-12. The vehicles, along with the cattle, were seized and taken to the police station.

Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh said, "The district police are maintaining strict vigil to prevent any post-election unrest, illegal arms movement and organised crime. Strong legal action will continue against anyone involved in unlawful activities."
