Kolkata, Oct. 28 -- IIT Kharagpur will establish India's first dedicated School of Physical AI with an investment of Rs 35 crore to develop artificial intelligence technologies that integrate scientific principles with real-world applications.

The institute has signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with its alumnus and philanthropist Vinod Gupta and IITKGP Foundation USA to establish the Benjamin Gupta School of Physical AI, named in memory of Gupta's late son.

The project will receive Rs 12.5 crore from the Vinod Gupta family, Rs 10 crore from an anonymous alumnus and the remaining Rs 12.5 crore from IIT Kharagpur. The school will focus on integrating AI with physics, engineering, medicine and other scientific disciplines to develop reliable and explainable technologies. Its research will cover areas such as physics-informed machine learning, scientific AI, digital twins, robotics, autonomous systems, advanced sensing and AI-enabled experimentation.

The applications will span advanced manufacturing, energy, agriculture, healthcare, medical devices, climate technologies and infrastructure.

The institute plans to offer hybrid master's programmes, executive education and professional certification courses to equip the next generation of engineers, scientists and healthcare professionals with the skills needed to work with advanced AI technologies.
