Chandigarh, Aug. 27 -- The Monsoon Session of the Haryana Assembly began on Thursday amid a major protest by the Opposition, with Speaker Harvinder Kalyan suspending eight Congress MLAs for the remainder of the day's proceedings after repeated disruptions.
Those suspended were Induraj Narwal, Vikas Saharan, Devender Hans, Shakuntala Khatak, Aditya Surjewala, Balram Dangi, Gokul Setia and Jassi Petwar.
The session opened with Congress legislators, including Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, wearing black and carrying placards as they sought to protest. Security personnel stopped them from taking the placards into the Assembly.
Under Rule 97(xi) of the Haryana Legislative Assembly Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, 2024, members are barred from carrying placards or raising slogans inside the House.
The Opposition subsequently raised allegations of manhandling by security personnel, triggering heated exchanges and disrupting proceedings. Amid the uproar, the Speaker ordered the suspension of the eight legislators.
