Lucknow, Aug. 25 -- Heavy to very heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Uttar Pradesh till Tuesday morning, with Azamgarh recording the highest rainfall of 180 mm, even as the state continued to face a 13 per cent seasonal rainfall deficit, the India Meteorological Department said.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Lucknow, Azamgarh was followed by Azamgarh station at 140.4 mm, Rajghat in Varanasi at 128 mm, Robertsganj in Sonbhadra at 120 mm, Varanasi airport at 119.8 mm and Basti at 117 mm in the 24 hours till 8.30 am Tuesday.
Jalalpur in Ambedkar Nagar received 114.4 mm, Chopan in Sonbhadra 112.2 mm, Sultanpur 107.8 mm, Chandauli 91 mm and Mirzapur tehsil 85 mm. The IMD said eastern Uttar Pradesh had received 473.4 mm rainfall against the normal 589.6 mm, a deficit of 20 per cent, while western UP received 498.6 mm against the normal 509.4 mm, a deficit of just 2 per cent.
Meanwhile, heavy overnight rains caused widespread waterlogging in Varanasi, with five people reported dead in separate rain-related incidents.
Two people, identified as Salimuddin, 45, and his 17-year-old son Anees, were electrocuted while carrying out decoration work at a house in the Sigra area amid the rain. In Chetganj, 50-year-old Triloki Modanwal died after suffering an electric shock while switching on a water cooler at a rented premises.
In another incident, a house wall collapsed at Manduadih Industrial Estate, burying a couple living in rented accommodation.
Several parts of Varanasi were waterlogged, with Sir Sunderlal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University surrounded by water.
