Kolkata, Sept. 28 -- The Calcutta High Court will hear on October 6 a petition by Trinamool leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, challenging the withdrawal of his Z-plus security cover after the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Justice Krishna Rao directed the petitioner to serve notice on the parties in the meantime. Banerjee's counsel submitted that Abhishek had been provided Z-plus security since 2016 and that the Union Home Ministry, following a threat assessment in 2024, had extended the cover across India.
According to the petitioner's counsel, the security arrangement was withdrawn after the May election results, following which personnel deployed at Abhishek's residence were also removed.
The counsel claimed that Banerjee faced four attacks since the withdrawal and had approached the authorities seeking restoration of the security cover.
The plea comes against the backdrop of an incident in late May when Abhishek was allegedly heckled and eggs were thrown at him in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. The petition seeks the court's intervention over the withdrawal of the security arrangement.
