Kolkata, Oct. 14 -- The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday reportedly reprimanded the CBI for failing to follow court protocol while submitting a progress report on its investigation into alleged illegal constructions and financial irregularities in Kolkata.
The Division Bench of the Chief Justice RV Ghuge and Justice Om Narayan Rai refused to accept the report after the agency submitted only one copy, despite the matter being heard by two judges. The Chief Justice questioned whether the CBI was unaware of the composition of a Division Bench and said such a lapse was unacceptable from an agency of its standing.
The court directed the CBI to submit the necessary documents with sufficient copies, adhering to the prescribed rules and administrative protocol. It also ordered the agency to produce a detailed final report at the next hearing, scheduled for December.
The investigation follows a September order by the same Bench directing the CBI to probe allegations concerning more than 50 illegal multi-storey buildings in Rajabazar, Beleghata, Maniktala and Canal East Road.
As part of the probe, the agency has been gathering information on the buildings and related flat documents. It has also sought records from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation concerning 42 identified buildings allegedly constructed illegally.
The latest hearing focused on procedural compliance rather than the merits of the ongoing investigation.
