Kolkata, Sept. 16 -- The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday dismissed a PIL seeking action over remarks made by former chief minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee at a public meeting in Kolkata earlier this year.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge took note of a report submitted by the state government on the alleged remarks. The report concluded that the statements did not disclose any element of a cognisable offence.
In an earlier hearing of the PIL the court had directed the state to place its report on the controversial comments before it.
The remarks were made by Banerjee at an Esplanade meeting on June 2, shortly after the Assembly elections.
Referring to an incident involving a Bangladeshi national allegedly linked to a murder, she said a person had entered West Bengal through Meghalaya and was subsequently arrested by the state police's Special Task Force during her tenure as chief minister.
Banerjee also referred to a conversation with the Union Home minister, saying she had refrained from speaking about the matter for some time.
She added that she did not want to identify anyone publicly, saying it could create agitation among people in Bangladesh.
