Kolkata, July 16 -- The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted interim protection from coercive action to Sumit Roy, personal assistant to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, until Monday while hearing his anticipatory bail plea.
The matter came up before the single bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh. During the hearing, the state's counsel sought additional time to place its submissions before the court.
Accepting the request, the court adjourned the hearing to Monday. At the same time, Justice Ghosh orally directed the state to ensure that no coercive steps are taken against Roy in the intervening period.
The interim protection will remain in force until the matter is taken up again next week, when the court is expected to hear the anticipatory bail plea in detail after the state places its response.
No detailed order on the merits of the plea was passed during Thursday's hearing.
