Kolkata, Sept. 29 -- Congress candidate Milan Pradhan, contesting the October 6 Nandigram Assembly bypoll, was granted interim bail by the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday in six criminal cases dating back to 2007 during the anti-land acquisition movement.

The relief allows Pradhan to campaign until the campaign period ends on October 4.

The court granted bail till October 20 and directed him to surrender before the trial court on October 21.

He was asked to furnish a bail bond of Rs 20,000 in each case and provide his mobile number to the investigating officer, who can contact him twice a day.

Pradhan, arrested on September 18, has been in judicial custody in four cases registered at Nandigram police station and two at Khejuri. The cases include murder, attempt to murder, and Arms Act charges.

He approached the HC after his arrest shortly after filing his nomination. The Nandigram seat fell vacant after Suvendu Adhikari retained Bhowanipore.

The MAITC candidate withdrew, after which Mamata Banerjee backed Pradhan. BJP candidate Hasina Rath is also in

the fray.
