Kolkata, Oct. 1 -- The Calcutta High Court on Thursday continued the interim shield against coercive steps for Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in a case arising from alleged hate speech, keeping the protection in force until January 29, 2027.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya passed the order after the West Bengal government placed an investigation report before the court. According to the report, Moitra had appeared before the investigating officer at Hogalberia police station on August 14 and responded to the questions put to her during the inquiry.
The state told the court that its investigation had not yet been completed. Moitra's lawyer, meanwhile, submitted that she was not subjected to egg-pelting when she appeared before the investigating agency.
Taking note of the submissions, the court extended the interim protection and listed the matter for further hearing on January 13.
The issue of alleged egg-pelting has also come up separately before a Division Bench headed by the Chief Justice in a public interest litigation concerning attacks on public officials.
During the PIL proceedings, the Chief Justice called for different cases involving alleged egg-pelting and other attacks on public officials to be clubbed together, bringing the incidents under a common judicial consideration.
