Kolkata, Sept. 2 -- The Calcutta High Court has directed West Bengal Police to inform former TMC MLA Tilak Kumar Chakraborty within 10 days about the number and details of criminal prosecutions pending against him, while allowing him to approach the appropriate court for bail.
The court passed the order while hearing Chakraborty's challenge to a criminal case registered at Sutahata police station on July 25, 2026, under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Chakraborty's counsel alleged that the case was "vexatious and frivolous" and part of political vendetta against him. The state opposed the plea and placed documents before the court.
The court noted that three other FIRs had been registered against Chakraborty and that he had secured bail in all three cases. It granted him liberty to seek pre-arrest bail or bail before the appropriate forum in accordance with law.
Taking note of his apprehension that more FIRs could be pending against him, the court directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Legal), West Bengal, to provide him with the number of pending prosecutions and necessary particulars within 10 days.
The court disposed of the writ petition but clarified that it had not adjudicated on the merits of Chakraborty's allegations or the issues raised in his plea.
