New Delhi, Oct. 12 -- The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notice on civil rights activist Mohammad Wasiq Nadeem Khan's petition alleging illegal confinement by police to prevent him from attending a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar on September 29, and sought a status report from the city police.

A bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma questioned the police's conduct, asking, "How can you enter the house of this man? ... Where is your cause to confine him?"

It acknowledged the police's right to deny permission for protests.

Khan's counsel alleged that two police personnel visited his residence-cum-office on September 29 and restricted his movement from around 9.30 am to 5.30 pm at the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind headquarters in Abul Fazal Enclave.

He was allegedly neither formally arrested nor given written grounds for his confinement.

Khan alleged confinement, constant surveillance and repeated police calls about his whereabouts, while police denied detaining him, saying personnel visited only to make enquiries after learning he might attend the protest despite permission being denied.
