Kolkata, Sept. 15 -- The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the state CID to expedite its investigation into the alleged encounter killing of Prabhas Mondal, who was accused of raping and murdering a minor in Baruipur.
A Division Bench of Justice Arijit Banerjee and Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra was hearing a batch of public interest petitions challenging the circumstances surrounding Mondal's death. The court expressed concern over the incident and stressed that the investigation should be completed without unnecessary delay.
Additional Advocate General Rajdeep Mazumder appeared for the state. During the hearing, the state submitted a report in a sealed cover, saying it contained information of a highly confidential nature.
The alleged encounter had earlier come under scrutiny before another Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee. The bench had directed the authorities to file a detailed affidavit providing, among other details, the relevant case number and particulars of the incident.
The court has also ordered the preservation of all records and documents related to the alleged encounter.
