Chandigarh, May 14 -- The Global Sikh Council (GSC), an international representative body of overseas Sikh institutions, has urged immediate amendments to Punjab's Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, expressing concern that certain provisions of the law could adversely affect Sikh religious practices and institutions.

In a letter to Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the GSC sought "sovereign Panthic intervention" to ensure corrective amendments to the legislation. Copies were also sent to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha.

GSC president Kanwaljit Kaur said the community continues to support strict punishment for deliberate sacrilege, but warned that the amended law contains "critical flaws" that could create distress among Sikhs. The council's principal objection is that the Act allegedly allows police authorities to interpret violations of Sikh Rehat Maryada while registering sacrilege-related cases. mpost
