Kolkata, Nov. 6 -- State government employees will lose 8 to 10 public holidays starting next year as the Suvendu Adhikari government plans to slash the number of holidays. Currently, state government employees avail 50 holidays in a calendar year and the state government will slash it to about 40.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has asked the additional chief secretary of the finance department, Prabhat Mishra, to reduce the number of holidays to about 40. Speaking to reporters at Nabanna on Wednesday, he said: "I called the finance secretary and told him that the number of holidays must be reduced. He submitted a list of 45 days. I told him to bring it down further to 40."

There has been a huge backlog of paperwork exists across departments and restoring a healthy work culture in government offices is essential to clear pending files and ensure faster service delivery. Adhikari, however, did not specify which festivals or occasions are likely to be removed in the revised holiday calendar for 2027.

State government may release the list of holidays by this month itself after taking final approval from the Chief Minister.
