
Coochbehar, Sept. 28 -- Ahead of the Puja festivities, Nishiganj Outpost police seized 814 grams of gold biscuits, estimated to be worth nearly Rs 1 crore, during a raid in Mathabhanga. Two persons, including an e-rickshaw driver, have been arrested in connection with the alleged smuggling attempt.
Acting on a tip-off, Nishiganj Outpost OC Rahul Oraon led a police team to Runibari area, where an e-rickshaw was intercepted and searched. During the operation, police recovered 814 grams of gold biscuits from the vehicle.
The arrested persons have been identified as Rahul Hussain and Arfan Hussain. Police said neither of the accused could produce valid documents to establish the legal possession or origin of the seized gold. According to police, one of the accused is a resident of the Nishiganj area, while the other is reportedly from Assam. Investigators are now probing the source of the gold and attempting to identify others who may be involved in the alleged smuggling network.
Police are also examining the circumstances under which the consignment was being transported through the area.
