Kolkata, May 25 -- A six-year-old girl died after a portion of a high mast lamp post collapsed on her near Hastings on Monday morning, triggering grief and allegations of poor maintenance by her family.

According to sources, the incident took place around 7.30 am near the RCTC boundary wall where the child, identified as Guriya Khatun, daughter of a footpath-dwelling couple, was playing. Suddenly, a portion of the high mast tower light reportedly broke off and fell on her, causing critical injuries.

Local residents and family members immediately rushed the child to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

The family alleged that negligence and inadequate maintenance of the high mast structure led to the accident. However, officials said the exact reason behind the collapse is yet to be determined. Police sources said no formal complaint had been lodged at Kolkata Police's Hastings Police Station till Monday night.

Later in the evening, Maniktala MLA Tapas Roy handed over a cheque of Rs 4 lakh to the victim's father at the SSKM police outpost on the instructions of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari as humanitarian assistance.

Behala Paschim MLA Indranil Khan and senior police officers were also present.
