Ghaziabad, Aug. 5 -- Three Kanwariyas, including a 17-year-old boy, were killed after their motorcycle rammed into the rear of an unidentified vehicle on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway in the early hours of Wednesday. Police suspect the rider was speeding and lost control before crashing into the vehicle ahead.
The accident occurred around 4.30 am near Kalchhina village under the Bhojpur police station limits. A passerby alerted emergency services after spotting three injured men and a badly damaged motorcycle on the expressway. Police reached the spot and rushed the victims to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared all three dead.
The deceased were identified as Gyan Prakash, 29, Rajkumar, 25, and Pradeep Singh, 17, all residents of Aligarh district. Gyan Prakash worked at a shoe manufacturing unit in Haryana. The trio had left Haryana on Tuesday night for the Kanwar pilgrimage and were travelling towards Haridwar to collect holy Ganga water.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Modinagar) Bhaskar Verma said preliminary findings suggested the motorcycle was travelling at high speed when the rider lost balance and collided with the vehicle. None of the three was wearing a helmet.
Police also recovered a liquor bottle from their belongings and are investigating whether alcohol consumption contributed to the crash. The exact cause will be established after post-mortem and forensic examination.
An FIR has been registered against the unidentified driver under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police are examining CCTV footage from the expressway and nearby toll plazas to identify the vehicle.
