New Delhi, Sept. 24 -- The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed banning the manufacture and sale of non-dairy products being marketed as paneer, citing concerns over misleading consumers about their composition.
In a draft amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, the regulator has proposed restrictions on products described as "paneer" when they are made from constituents not derived from milk. Stakeholders have been given 60 days to submit objections or suggestions.
Products already licensed under the "Analogue in Dairy Context" category would have to remove the term "paneer" from their nomenclature, labels and marketing.
The Health Ministry said the move would ensure product names accurately reflect their nature and composition. Several states have already banned analogue paneer.
The proposal comes amid increased enforcement by FSSAI against misleading claims, labelling violations and hygiene-related breaches, including recent action against major e-commerce platforms.
