Kolkata, July 30 -- A fresh confrontation has emerged between the Mamata Banerjee-led Kalighat faction and the Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction over the observance of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) Foundation Day on August 28.
The dispute comes just weeks after the unprecedented showdown between the two camps over the July 21 Martyrs' Day programme. This time, both factions are seeking permission from Kolkata Police to organise their TMCP Foundation Day event, with Mayo Road emerging as the preferred venue.
According to sources, the Ritabrata Banerjee faction has already submitted an application to Kolkata Police seeking permission for the programme.
While the application reportedly mentions two or three alternative venues, Mayo Road is understood to be the first choice.
The faction has not publicly disclosed the names of the alternative venues.
Until last year, Mamata Banerjee used to observe the TMCP Foundation Day at the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road. However, the political situation has changed dramatically after the change of government in West Bengal and the split within the Trinamool Congress.
Sources said the Mamata Banerjee-led faction also wants to hold the August 28 programme at Mayo Road, setting the stage for another contest over the venue.
Leaders of the Ritabrata camp said they were not rigid about the location and would conduct the programme in accordance with the law and subject to police permission.
While, Baiswanor Chattopadhyay stated: "Venue won't matter. If Mamata Banerjee calls, people will come anywhere."
