Kolkata, Aug. 17 -- The Mamata Banerjee faction of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) on Monday approached the Calcutta High Court seeking an early hearing of its plea over alleged inaction by Kolkata Police on its request to hold the organisation's foundation day programme at the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road on August 28.

Appearing before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, TMCP counsel said the organisation had applied to Kolkata Police for permission on July 27 but received no response. Reminders were subsequently sent on August 3 and 7, he submitted.

The organisation then moved the High Court on August 14, seeking directions in the matter.

Justice Bhattacharyya said the matter was expected to appear in Wednesday's list. He permitted the counsel to mention it before the court on Thursday if it was not listed. The plea seeks clarity on whether the proposed August 28 programme can be held at the designated venue.
