New Delhi, Sept. 5 -- As the food safety crackdown gathers pace across Bengal, Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) food safety officers stepped up the drive on Saturday, conducting raids at several hotels and restaurants in areas, including Dacres Lane, Jorabagan and Lake-Market. The teams also descended on a number of godowns as part of the ongoing inspections.
KMC food safety officials inspecting Dacres Lane on Saturday found a large quantity of dumped sweets at a godown near Dharmatala. The officials reportedly spotted fungus on the sweets and discarded them. They also collected samples of various food items from roadside eateries and restaurants for testing.
Park Street saw raids on Friday, with officials inspecting seven popular restaurants. They also checked raw and cooked food, including meat and vegetables, and questioned storage periods.
Safety concerns were raised at Kareem's, Arsalan and Don Giovanni's, while Tung Fong and Mocambo passed the checks. Expired water bottles were also found at another outlet, with notices issued after some inspections. Officials also inspected kitchens and storage areas at Park Street establishments, including Peter Cat, Arsalan, KFC and Mocambo.
Meanwhile, an Arsalan spokesperson alleged that some YouTubers were trying to extort money from the restaurant, and said a complaint was lodged with Dum Dum P.S after one allegedly demanded money to withhold a video.
During these inspections, as many as 901 food samples were collected from different parts of West Bengal for testing.
