Kolkata, Sept. 2 -- The first meeting for drafting the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for West Bengal is going to be held at Banga Bhawan in Delhi on Thursday, which will be chaired by former Supreme Court judge, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.
The UCC committee is going to stress uniform civil norms for marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships with thrust on monogamy, compulsory marriage and divorce registration and recognition of live-in relationship for the legal safeguards of children and at the same time will exempt Scheduled Tribes for their constitutional safeguards.
Justice Desai committee is to draft the UCC for Bengal.
The state govt decided to go for UCC in June, which was announced by the state chief minister Suvendu Adhikari in the state Assembly, later on July 2, the state Cabinet approved it.
The state home department in a missive stated that for draftinjg the UCC the committee had been formed which will be framing a "comprehensive legal framework for all citizens who
are residents of the state, irrespective of their religion, faith and community."
Among the other members of the committee are Bengal home secretary Sanghamitra Ghosh, Tathagata Roy, ex-Governor of Meghalaya, Bengal's resident commissioner Dushyant Nariala, advocate Osman Gani Mallick, ex-IAS Shantrughna Sinha and former teachers Ratna Bhattacharya and Gopal Chandra Misra.
