Kolkata, Sept. 3 -- Former Panihati Municipality chairman and TMC leader Somnath Dey was arrested in Bengaluru on Thursday in connection with the investigation into the alleged hurried and unauthorised cremation of the RG Kar rape-murder victim's body.

A special team of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, assisted by Karnataka Police, tracked down Dey at a guest house in Bengaluru after he allegedly moved across several states, including Hyderabad, to evade arrest. He is being brought to Bengal on transit remand and is expected to be produced before the Barrackpore ACJM court.

Dey is a principal co-accused in a fresh FIR at Khardah Police Station based on a complaint by the victim's father, alleging a criminal conspiracy surrounding the cremation.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh questioned the arrest, saying it did not establish guilt and asking why the CBI, which had earlier investigated the case, had not arrested Dey. He also alleged the police action could have political motives.
