New Delhi, Sept. 17 -- Former Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi has strongly criticised the Election Commission's ongoing voter-roll revision, calling the mass deletion of registered voters "unlawful" and warning of possible criminal accountability for wrongful removals.
Speaking at a People's Union for Civil Liberties forum, Quraishi claimed the Special Intensive Revision process had removed around 13 to 14 crore people from electoral rolls. He questioned the constitutional and statutory basis for such a nationwide exercise, arguing that provisions under the Representation of the People Act were intended for localised revisions.
Quraishi, who headed the EC from 2010 to 2012, also criticised the poll panel's alleged failure to act against communal campaign rhetoric.
