Kolkata, Sept. 28 -- Former Bongaon Uttar MLA Biswajit Das was arrested on Monday afternoon by the cops of Gopalnagar police station after an unlicensed firearm was allegedly recovered from his car.
According to sources, on Monday afternoon Das was moving through the Gopalnagar Market area in his car. Suddenly, a police team intercepted the former MLA's car and conducted a thorough search of the vehicle, which led to the discovery of a firearm.
Failing to produce valid documentation for the fire arm, the politician was detained and taken to the Gopalnagar police station. After a preliminary inquiry, a case was registered against him under the relevant section of the Arms Act following which Das was arrested.
It may be mentioned that Das was a two-time MLA from Bangaon Uttar Assembly Constituency. He was also given the charge of the president of the Bangaon organisational district of the erstwhile Trinamool Congress in 2024. Das had contested in the 2024 Parliamentary elections as well but lost. In 2026 Assembly Elections, he contested again. However, he was defeated by BJP candidate Ashok Kirtania.
