Kolkata, May 17 -- Panic spread across the Goruhata More area in Uluberia of Howrah on Sunday morning after the body of an unidentified elderly man was recovered from inside a trolley bag dumped beside National Highway-16.

According to sources, the body was discovered after local residents noticed a suspicious black trolley bag lying in bushes near the highway. Some residents were reportedly alerted by a foul smell emanating from the bag. When they opened the luggage to check its contents, they found the body of an elderly man stuffed inside.

Uluberia police station was immediately informed, following which a police team rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. During the preliminary inquiry, police reportedly found no visible injury marks on the body. However, the deceased appeared to be in poor health and severely underweight.

Sources said the deceased is suspected to be around 55 to 60 years old. The body was later sent to Uluberia Sarat Chandra Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. During inquiry, local residents informed police that stray dogs in the area had barked continuously around 3 am, leading investigators to suspect that the body might have been dumped at that time.

Officers are waiting for the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death. Investigators are also examining whether the man may have died due to malnutrition before the body was dumped to conceal the matter.

Police have started checking CCTV footage from nearby areas to trace any suspicious movement. Details and photographs of the deceased have been circulated to police stations across the state.
