Malda, Aug. 28 -- A 60-year-old businessman was found with his throat slit at his residence in a posh locality of English Bazar, Malda, on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Arnab Sen alias Paltu. He traded in turmeric in Kolkata's Jadavpur area. According to his family, Sen, who was unmarried, had returned to his ancestral house in Malda only on Thursday from his residence in Jadavpur.
The incident took place at Government Colony No. 2 of English Bazar Municipality area. Sen's body was recovered from a room on the ground floor of the three-storey house. Family members and neighbours reportedly noticed that the belongings inside the room were scattered, raising suspicion that the assailants may have searched the house after the murder.
Police officials said the exact motive behind the killing is yet to be established. Investigators were examining CCTV footage from the locality to identify the persons who entered or left the area around the time of the incident.
Family members said Sen's body was found with a rakhi tied on his wrist, leading them to suspect that the murder might have taken place earlier in the morning.
"We are shocked that such a brutal incident could take place in this area. He had returned from Kolkata on Thursday. We want the police to identify the killers at the earliest," said Soma Sen Sarkar, a cousin of the deceased.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Libang Tamang said, "We have started an investigation and are examining the CCTV footage. The circumstances surrounding the death are being verified, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved."
Meanwhile, a 25-year-old woman, Shila Bibi, was allegedly murdered by her husband Mozammil Momin at Boglatoli in Manikchak on Thursday night. Police arrested Mozammil and his sister-in-law following the incident.
The family alleged an illicit relationship between them. "We demand the strictest punishment," said relatives Qurban Momin and Fensi Bibi.
