Kolkata, May 13 -- The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has sent a letter to the Directorate of Security seeking information about the whereabouts of Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas.
According to sources, ED has asked for information about Biswas's present status such as where he has been deployed and what duty he is performing at present. A few days ago ED had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against the Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner after he repeatedly skipped summons in connection with a high-profile money laundering case probe. The move by the central agency was aimed to prevent the senior Kolkata Police officer from leaving the country.
Biswas's name had surfaced while probing allegations of land grabbing and extortion linked to a notorious criminal Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu. ED has reportedly claimed that Biswas has vital links to the proceeds of crime generated by the syndicate involved in the land grabbing and extortion. Despite being served at least five summons to appear before the investigating officers, the DC did not turn up.
On April 19, ED officials conducted a 14-hour long raid at Biswas's residence on Fern Road in Ballygunge, close to Sona Pappu's residence. During the search, investigators reportedly seized several incriminating documents and electronic devices. The probe has also extended to his two sons, who were also summoned for questioning regarding suspicious financial transactions, but none of them appeared as well. Earlier, Biswas was also summoned in connection with the sand smuggling case as well. However, he had sent his lawyer seeking additional time for his appearance.
