Kolkata, Sept. 9 -- Officials from the state Drug Control Department and the Enforcement Branch of Kolkata Police conducted a joint raid at Mehta Building in Bara Bazar on Wednesday. They inspected several shops, with officials checking the documents and records associated with individual medicines.

Officials also examined whether any banned drugs or counterfeit medicines were being sold at the shops. The officials checked medicine batches and verified whether the products matched the relevant records and documentation.

The raids were prompted by concerns over fake medicines being sold through different channels, including incidents involving online platforms that advertised medicines at lower prices. This development comes as the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and food safety officials carried out an extensive drive in restaurants and hotels in the city.

Against this backdrop, the joint operation by the Drug Control Department and Kolkata Police focused on verifying the authenticity and legality of medicines being sold in the market.

Over the past seven days, Food Safety Department officials have also conducted inspections at numerous roadside food stalls and eateries across West Bengal. With Durga Puja drawing closer and footfall expected to rise sharply across markets, restaurants and shopping malls, authorities are stepping up inspections to check compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
